30 October 1940 – 101 Squadron RAF West Raynham – Bristol Blenheim IV – T2246 - P/O J M Cave RAF and crew – Ops Duisberg/Ruhrort
Location - Dunster Wood near Coleby north of Scunthorpe
Cave and his crew took off from West Raynham in the early evening of the 30th October 1940 to attack targets in the Duisberg – Ruhrort area of Germany. They were one of six 101 Squadron crews detailed for this operation. The targets were obscured by 10/10 cloud and the aircraft were forced to seek targets of opportunity in the region. The returning aircraft encountered poor visibility over the eastern area of England. Cave's aircraft was well off course and eventually crashed at around 23:00 hrs in a wood near Coleby.
All three crew members were killed.
The brother of the pilot, F/L V G Cave RNZAF, also died in service.
