09-Jan-43 – Essen
103 Squadron detailed 10 aircraft for this experimental attack on Essen. The new bombing technique was once again tested and it appears a successful raid. S/L Kennard did the “recco” report and found the target clear of cloud. Two aircraft returned early, one failed to take off and one failed to return, that of Sgt Morris and crew.
For this attack on Essen Bomber Command detailed 2 Pathfinder Mosquitos and 50 Lancasters. 3 Lancasters lost. Essen reports concentrated bombing in or near the centre with 127 buildings destroyed or seriously damaged and 28 people killed
