Sgt Gerald C Brams RAFVR and crew – 103 Squadron – RAF Newton - 1940
Crashed – 3rd August 1940 – Fairey Battle - L5433 – Night Flying Cross Country Exercise.
Gerald Brams and his Observer, James Mallard, were both with 103 Sqn from the start of WW2 and had served with the Squadron in France in 1939/40 up to the evacuation.
Whilst undertaking a training sortie the aircraft climbed, stalled and hit trees on approach to Cottesmore after mistaking it for Newton. This was a night training sortie.
Their Wireless Operator / Air Gunner was Sgt Davies who sustained slight injuries in the crash.
This was a very sad loss as both were experienced pre war airmen who had served with distinction in France. Both were married.
