Failed to Return – 21/22th January 1943 –  Avro Lancaster I – W4340 – Op Essen

Edgar Burgess and crew were posted to 103 Squadron at Elsham Wolds December 1942. They flew the following operations.

09-Jan-43 – Essen – Lancaster – W4364 – F/S EH Burgess  - Early return -  Rear turret hydraulic gear unserviceable.

11-Jan-43 – Essen – Lancaster – W4788 – F/S EH Burgess

12-Jan-43 – Essen – Lancaster – W4336 – F/S EH Burgess

16-Jan-43 – Berlin – Lancaster – W4333 – F/S EH Burgess – ER - Late take off & pilot felt he was unable to reach target with main force.

17-Jan-43 – Berlin – Lancaster – W4333 – F/S EH Burgess - Diverted to Croft.

21-Jan-43 – Essen – Lancaster – W4340 – P/O EH Burgess – FTR - Lost without trace. Night fighter victim

21-Jan-43 – Essen

103 Squadron detailed 10 aircraft for this attack on the German city of Essen. The “ High Flying Technique “ was used and cloud conditions up to 10/10ths were experienced. Sgt Berry did the recco report. One aircraft returned early due to failure of one engine. F/S Burgess and crew and Sgt Laing and crew failed to return.

For this attack on Essen Bomber Command detailed a total of 79 Lancasters and 3 Mosquitos The force encountered total cloud and bombs were dropped blindly on estimated positions. 4 Lancasters lost.
