He was the youngest son of 5 children: his oldest brother Henry and three older sisters Beatrice, Dorothy and Ruby. His father William Willcocks was a Royal Navy Pensioner. He served over 25 years in the Royal Navy ending his career as a Chief Writer at Devonport. He served in WW1 including in the battle of the Falklands. 20-Oct-43 - Leipzig
103 Squadron detailed 14 aircraft for this attack on the German city of Leipzig. The attack was hampered by 9/10ths to 10/10ths cloud. Pathfinders used both sky and ground marking in view of the cloud. Bombing heights were between 18000 ft and 22000 ft and hampered by severe icing conditions. Owing to the weather conditions marking was poor and the raid scattered. Flak was negligible although searchlights could not penetrate the cloud. F/O Morgan's gunners drove off a Fw190 which was the only fighter sighting reported. All returned to base except W/O Pargeter and crew.
For this attack on the important Nazi industrial city of Leipzig Bomber Command detailed a total of 358 Lancasters of 1, 5, 6 and No 8 Groups. 16 Lancasters lost, 4.5 per cent of the force. This was the first serious attack on this distant German city. Weather conditions were very difficult - Bomber Command records describe them as 'appalling' and the bombing was very scattered.
