W/O Thomas John Bassett DFC RAAF - 103 Sqn and 576 Sqn - 1943 - Pilot

Jack Bassett, an Australian, was a pilot with 103 Sq from Aug 43 to Nov 43 during which period he completed 26 operations. His crew were transferred to 576 Sq at its inception.

576 Squadron - Bassett crew

He crash landed at Wickenby in bad weather on return from an operation to Berlin on the 17th Dec 43. This was Black Thursday. The crews returned to their bases to find a very low cloud base and fog all over Lincs and East Yorkshire. Jack overshot the runway, retracted the under carriage and did a wheels up crash landing. 3 of the crew were injured but otherwise all were safe. W/O Bassett and his crew were screened at this point.

He sadly passed away in 1964 in hospital in Sidney.
