Important Announcement

It is with great regret that the Committee have decided to wind up the Society at the recent AGM. This is largely due to an aging and declining membership and lack of younger members.

The website may well continue in a revised form as an archive with a number of new resources added but a decision regarding this has not been taken yet. More news re this will follow in due course.

NORMAN FAIRFAX, MBE 1927-2013

Died peacefully on 7th November aged 86.

I have only known Norman in the later years of his life, but they have been memorable ones. In fact it was my wife Judy who first met Norman when he visited Fairfax House in York in 1996, at which time we were its resident custodians. I quickly got in touch with him, delighted to find that there was a real Fairfax I could contact to help me in my struggles to find out more about the family so that I could answer the many questions asked by our visitors.

Naturally, the existence of the recently formed Fairfax Society was made known to me and I joined it immediately. This soon led to surprising results for me, but first Norman took over the Chairmanship of the society in 1999 at a time when it was experiencing serious administrative and financial difficulties. Under his leadership, and thanks to the indefatigable efforts of Cynthia Bunch who had succeeded Norman as Secretary, the fortunes of the society underwent a transformation for the better which happily continues to the present day.

Norman's unrivalled knowledge and enthusiasm for research into the history of his illustrious family made him the natural person to take on the job of Research Co-ordinator for the society. Over the years he has brought to light a massive amount of information, some modest part of which has been disseminated in articles by Norman with enviable regularity in almost every issue of the society journal.

It must be left to others who knew him better to tell us more about his distinguished career, but for me it has been a great privilege and pleasure to have known and worked with him in that final phase of his life's work. His passing is a great loss to the Fairfax Society and much more so to his family to whom we extend our deepest sympathy.”
